Hi,
This is my entry for the CGCHALLENGE XXI - STRANGE BEHAVIOR. For this one, I didn't want to do something too stupid, so I chose a subject that encourage reflection, without being too violent in the ideas...
I mixed the religion and war themes.
As you probably know (or not), "enola gay" is the name of the "boeing 29 superfortress" that dropped the nuclear bombs on hiroshima killing instantly over 70 000 people. And as you probably know the crew and the bombs were blessed by a father.
The idea of my picture has a larger significance than only blessing Weapon of mass destruction. I try to bring the spectators to ask questions to himself, particularly on the hijacking of the religion to justify military actions, just because it's benefic for a government. The idea don't aim precisely the usa, but also others countries who do the same thing. Now, it's up to anyone to choose the links to do.
This is a subject that could be discuss a long time, and the antagonists would not probably agree at the end. Anyway, my goal is, not to impose a point of view, but to bring people to ask questions and think about it. That's one of the role of the art, i think. We are in a great digital era where there's an explosion of multimedia. So, we should make people think, instead of comparing and illustration or a painting to a entertainment, or worse... a merchandise.
That's the reason why I decided to choose an event that marked the human history. The atomic bomb is the highest devastating weapon that we've created.
Moreover, i decided to do a kind of "caricature" explaining why my priest behave as if he was a beast.
To finish, i'd say that i chose some well kown pictures from history, accentuate them, and propose an axle of reflection.
Technic info :
The picture was done with 3DS MAX and ZBrush (for characters), rendered with VRay in 4 passes (my computer was not powerful enought to render it in one time) - first pass for the cockpit, second for the pilots, third for the priest, and the fourth for the planes outside. I also added 1 more pass for objects on the ground/seats, and another one for the cockpit windows. I used after effects for smoke, blur and explosions, and photoshop for the mattepainting on the background and for the final adjustements.
I spent about 3months on the modeling, texturing, skinning and compositing, and you can read the work in progress here : http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=225&t=537042
Original size : 4000 x 2250 px
I hope you like it
